On Wednesday, November 2, 2011, JD Breast Cancer Foundation lost one of it’s founders and first Executive Director, Dr. Robin Bartolotta. After a 14-year battle, she succumb to breast cancer with her husband and our Assistant Treasurer, Terry Cariglio at her side.

In the past 2 or 3 weeks her health took a dramatic turn for the worse, and little to no medical options were available beyond palliative care. God was merciful in allowing this last phase of her life to be short.

Robin and Jacqueline Dobransky were diagnosed at the same time in their lives and became friends who recognized a need for breast cancer support services for younger women. As survivors under the age of 35, they created the Foundation to provide emotional support groups for younger women and to educate them about new treatments and care options.

The women we have served are a direct result of her vision and passion. Our logo was inspired by her love of dolphins she often saw on her visits with Terry to Hawaii.

Her tenacity and mental resolve to beat her cancer and continue living were only matched by the care and compassion Terry gave her over the last 14 years.

We love and miss her but will carry-on with the services both she and Jackie wanted for younger women and their families.

You can find her obituary here.

During 2010, JD Breast Cancer Foundation conducted a survey of social workers, Patient Navigators, and nurses to determine a need for a centrally located support group with a focus on a variety of topics and activities that support camaraderie, friendship and mutual support, provided free-of-charge and targeting younger women. The response yielded a need for this type of service, thus, JD Breast Cancer Foundation is seeking to move towards implementation of this type of service. The primary focus of this group will be the information and/or activity shared by the participants, not and will not be a strict therapeutic environment, although counseling skills may be necessary through the presentation of the topics.

The facilitator is not expected to present all topics and is encouraged to engage specialists and others from the community to make presentations to the group. Topics can include medical advancements and therapies, but it is hoped that food, nutrition, intimacy, relationships, financial stability, raising children and families, etc, will also be emphasized.

Through this Request for Services, JD Breast Cancer Foundation is seeking proposals from potential therapists/social workers/psychologists who would be interested in developing and facilitating a monthly seminar that would achieve the following:

Discuss topics specific and relevant to a younger survivor: fertility, parenting, nutrition, etc…

Create an environment of camaraderie among the participants

Educate women about medical advances and integrative therapies

Allows survivors to share their personal struggles and triumphs

Includes a therapeutic approach for survivors

Provided on-site at JD Breast Cancer Foundation offices in University Circle

Applicants should use the following outline for their proposal:

Biography of the Applicant

Course Outline for a 12-month Timeframe

Creating an Environment of Caring, Sharing, and Support: How Will You Do This?

Recruitment: Your Recommendation for Getting the Survivors

References (Please provide 3)

Cost Estimate including a detailed budget

Proposals should be no more than 5 pages in length using 1-inch margins and 12-point font. Attachments of previous curriculum and/or
presentations you have conducted are acceptable but should be no more than 5 pages.

JD Breast Cancer Foundation seeks to host monthly seminars that host an average of 10-15 women. Providing babysitting services is currently
being reviewed and considered to support single-parent attendance. JD Breast Cancer Foundation is located in the Junior League House that includes a small kitchen and intimate sitting rooms.

Proposals are encouraged to view the current website at: www.jdbcfoundation.org

Responses are requested no later than Tuesday, September 6, 2011 @ 5:00pm and may be emailed to allison.motz@att.net

JDBCF will review proposals submitted through an ad-hoc team and conduct in-person or conference call follow-up with the top three selected
bidders by Tuesday, September 20, 2011.

JD Breast Cancer Foundation conducted a 7-month Executive Director search to find a new member of our family. In September 2010, the Foundation selected JT Aguila! JT has nearly 25 years of fundraising experience, including marketing/planning of fundraising Walks, Black Tie Galas, LIVE on-air televised membership campaigns, celebrity meet & greets, benefit concerts & dinners, motorcycle rides, golf tournaments & other fundraising special events.

Each month, JD Breast Cancer Foundation receives over 20 applications for financial support and assistance. Without the continued dedication of Lisa Mullowney, the Program Director for the Foundation, our clients and their families would not receive the immediate care and concern they so desperately need.

The Board of Directors voted in the following new officers who will serve a two-year term: Karen Lippmann of Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court to Board President, Erin Adams Armstrong of Armstrong Law Offices as Vice President, Hayley Williams to Second Vice President, Anne Curry-Smith of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation to Secretary, and Mark Royle of Nordson Corporation to Treasurer.

“…last Saturday, I was privileged to emcee a runway event for the not-so-genetically blessed. The JD Breast Cancer Foundation is a local organization that provides essential services, education and financial assistance for younger women with breast cancer — women in their late 20s, 30s, early 40s, most of whom have young families.

A handful of women were nominated by their health care providers, JD board members or their families to get a little celebrity treatment — a morning of shopping to choose a new outfit, courtesy of T.J. Maxx, matching jewelry from the accessories store Hoopla, and a professional hair and makeup session before they walked down a pink carpet to the raucous applause of their friends and families.”
